The African Private Equity and Venture Capital Association (AVCA) has appointed tanzanian Genevieve Sangudi as vice chairman, board of directors with immediate effect.
Since July 2020, Genevieve Sangudi, 45, is Partner at Alterra Capital Partners, a Pan-African growth investment and buyout firm with $700 million in assets under management. Spin-out of the Carlyle Africa Franchise.
Alterra Capital Partners is an Africa-focused private equity firm targeting exceptional domestic-facing companies out of offices in Johannesburg and Nairobi. The firm was established in 2020 after The Carlyle Group and Alterra’s senior leadership agreed to transition Carlyle’s Sub-Saharan Africa Fund to an independent platform. Alterra Capital Partners manages stakes in firms like Nigerian banking giant Access Bank, diversified soft commodity group ETG of Kenya, and Gabon’s oil and gas junior, Assala Energy. Genevieve Sangudi is also Operating Executive at the American private equity company Carlyle in Africa, after serving as Managing Director for nine years, from 2011 to 2020. Carlyle is one of the largest global asset management companies in the world.
Genevieve Sangudi is specialized in Corporate finance, accounting and audit, business development, risk management, executive leadership and investor relations. She has considerable marketing, investment and fund management experience from a 22-year career in the health, financial services, oil and gas, petrochemical, agri-food and telecommunications in the US and across Africa.
A marketing executive at Procter & Gamble
Born in Kenya, Genevieve Sangudi, started her career in JP Morgan as a Senior Associate, and went on to gain remarkable experience in the fast moving consumer goods sector [FMCG], as the Marketing Manager for Procter & Gamble in Boston, Massachusetts where she worked on market strategies for several multi-billion dollar global brands. After that, she joined Emerging Capital Partners, a pan-African private equity firm, as a partner and managing director. At Emerging Capital Partners, she served on the boards of portfolio companies working closely with the executive teams. she established and managed the firm’s Nigeria operations and played a lead role in deal sourcing, execution and value creation, particularly for companies in the financial services, oil and gas and petrochemicals sectors. With over $1.8 billion in management and under her guidance, Emerging Capital Partners made several profitable and timeous investments in several Nigerian blue-chip companies.
Launch of Carlyle’s first Sub-Saharan Africa fund
Genevieve Sangudi joined Carlyle in 2011, from inception, and played a leading role in the launch of Carlyle’s first Sub-Saharan Africa fund, including fundraising, strategy, origination and execution. Based in Johannesburg, South Africa, she is leading on a number of significant transactions in Gabon, Tanzania, Nigeria and Uganda.
Genevieve Sangudi holds a BA from Macalester College, St Paul, Minnesota, an MA in International Affairs from Columbia University, New York, and an MBA from the Columbia Business School, Columbia University.
Genevieve Sangudi is currently a non-executive director at Tullow Oil since February 2019 and will be appointed chair of the remuneration committee following the Company’s Annual General Meeting in 2022.
She also served as the Director of Continental Reinsurance PLC in 2008 as well as Director of Blue Financial Services Limited from May 2008 to September 2009. From 2010 – 2011, she was a Director with Oando PLC before her appointment into the Carlyle Group in 2011.
