Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu named head of content acquisition for Amazon Prime in Africa

A Nigerian national, she was director of West Africa for M-Net, a South African television channel owned by the Naspers group, and similar to Canal+ in its operation.

Prime Video is a video on demand service created by Amazon and present in many countries. A competitor to Netflix, it offers movies, series and TV shows for rent or purchase.
In her new position, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu will be responsible for defining and executing the content strategy for Prime Video in sub-Saharan Africa; overseeing content licensing/commissioning, selection, etc. for film and TV, for both US and local programs; building the content acquisition pipeline for local and US/Hollywood content in all languages as well as conceptualizing content opportunities and partnerships with studios, TV broadcasters and content owners/aggregators.

Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu has been passionate about broadcasting since she was a child, when she aspired to be a news anchor. After competing in a beauty pageant at the age of 17, she studied political science at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, giving up her dreams of studying international relations and becoming a diplomat.

A few years after graduating in 1992, Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu began working for the marketing agency Tequila Nigeria as a customer service manager. She then studied direct marketing at the Institute of Direct Marketing in the UK, where she obtained a postgraduate degree. She then worked as Brand and Marketing Communications Manager at Airtel Nigeria; Strategic Marketing Manager, COLAS portfolio and Strategic Marketing Manager, STILLS portfolio at Coca-Cola Nigeria as well as Brand Manager at British American Tobacco Nigeria.

M-Net Strategic Planning

Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu joined pay-TV broadcaster M-Net Africa in 2012 as regional director for West Africa, in charge of strategic planning, marketing and operations, the first personality to hold this position. In 2014, she became M-Net’s regional director of operations in West Africa. Based in Lagos, Nigeria, she managed M-Net’s various channels, including Africa Magic Showcase, Africa Magic Family, Africa Magic Epic, Africa Magic Urban, Africa Magic World and three national language channels – Africa Magic Hausa, Africa Magic Yoruba and Africa Magic Igbo.

In this position, she spearheaded the launch of Africa Magic Igbo and Africa Magic’s Viewers Choice Awards and also spearheaded a number of content development and showcasing initiatives, such as Africa Magic GO, Africa Magic’s video-on-demand service, and the Africa Magic Original Films project, an initiative that provides a platform for showcasing quality original African titles.

Wangi Mba explained in an interview that her ideas are facilitated by the fact that she first launched her career in strategic planning and marketing.
