The Gambian banker is the CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria and West Africa since December 2018. In his new position, he will still be based in Nigeria . In Africa, Standard Chartered Bank operates in 16 countries: Angola, Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Mauritius, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Gambia, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Lamin Manjang has over 30 years of professional experience and has worked in the banking industry for 24 years. Prior to becoming CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria and West Africa in 2018, he was, from 2014 to 2018, CEO of the British bank in Kenya and East Africa. As CEO of Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria and West Africa in 2018, Lamin Manjang had replaced Bola Adesola, who was promoted to Vice President Africa of the British Bank in Africa.
While CEO of the bank in Kenya, Lamin Manjang was also Chairman of the Board of the Kenya Bankers Association. He was re-elected to this position in 2017. The Gambian banker was credited with playing a key role in steering the banking sector in Kenya during the period of the enactment of the Banking Act, which introduced price controls on interest rates for bank deposits and loans. Notable developments under his leadership include greater banking innovation and industry-wide collaboration to improve the efficiency of the national payments system. In addition, the creation of Integrated Payment Services Limited (IPSL) and the launch of PesaLink have been recognised as the hallmarks of his chairmanship.
Various positions held at Standard Chartered Bank
Lamin Manjang joined Standard Chartered Bank in 1999 in Gambia. He served as the bank’s Managing Director in Oman, from August 2012 to January 2014; Uganda and Sierra Leone and enabled the growth and development of Standard Chartered’s business in these countries. Lamin Manjang has also served as the bank’s Finance Director and Head of Corporate Sales in Sierra Leone and The Gambia.
At Standard Chartered, Lamin Manjang is also a member of the Risk Committee, Credit Committee, Nomination, Evaluation and Remuneration Committee and Chairman of the Assets and Liabilities Committee.
Prior to joining Standard Chartered, Lamin Manjang was the Managing Director of Gambia International Airlines.
Lamin Manjang holds a Diploma in Business Administration in International Finance from the International Islamic University Malaysia; a Diploma in Accountancy, obtained in 1993, from the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and a Master of Business Administration, Finance, General, which he obtained in 1993.
