Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and associate dean of engineering at Central Piedmont Community College, Professor Miatudila was one of six personalities honored by the Alumni Association of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte at the Alumni Awards 2024 ceremony, held at the UNC Charlotte Marriott Hotel and Conference Center.
The UNC Charlotte Alumni Association Awards were established in 1985 to recognize those who have made important contributions to the establishment and growth of UNC Charlotte; embody the core principles of the University; and have distinguished themselves through their outstanding service to the University, their chosen field, humanity and/or society.
These awards honor alumni and friends whose careers have been distinguished by significant accomplishments or through extraordinary service to alumni, faculty, students, and communities, especially the underserved.
Professor Alain Miatudila told Africanshapers that it is a great honor and a source of pride for him to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo as the first African to be recognized as a Distinguished Alumni of UNC Charlotte.
Chancellor Sharon L. Gaber commented: “We are proud to honor the tremendous accomplishments of six distinguished UNC Charlotte alumni. They have excelled at the highest levels in their fields while also supporting UNC Charlotte and our students. Their lasting impact is helping make Charlotte the great university it is today.”

Head of 10 undergraduate engineering programs
Alain S. Miatudila, Sr. is associate dean of engineering at Central Piedmont Community College, where he is responsible for strategic planning and academic affairs for 10 undergraduate engineering programs: biomedical equipment technology, civil engineering technology, computer engineering technology, computer-integrated machining technology, electrical engineering technology, electronic engineering technology, geomatics technology, mechanical engineering technology, mechatronics engineering technology and sustainable technologies.
In 2023, he was a visiting professor at the Polytechnic Faculty of the University of Kinshasa, where his visionary leadership catalyzed collaborations between that university and U.S. universities, fostering academic exchanges, dynamic lectures and mentorship for students.
Prior to CPCC, PDr. Miatudila spent 11 years as an associate professor in the Department of Engineering Technology and Construction Management (ETCM) at UNC Charlotte. He contributed to the ETCM department from 2008 to 2019 and taught undergraduate civil engineering technology, mechanical engineering technology, geomatics engineering technology and construction management courses.
Career in the private sector
Prior to joining the higher education sector, Dr. Miatudila worked for 10 years in the private sector in the North and South Carolina regions. He held positions with Persis-Nova Construction, Co. and R. Joe Harris & Associates, P.L.L.C. His professional experience covers a wide range of fields: civil engineering, infrastructure, construction management, architecture and interior design.
Alain serves on the advisory board for the Academy of Engineering at Charlotte-Mecklenburg’s Independence High School and Mallard Creek High School, and serves as president of the Congolese Association of Engineers. The National Organization for Student Success recognized him as the 2021 Outstanding National Alumnus of a Student Success program.
Alain earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering technology, his master’s degree in civil engineering and his Ph.D. in civil engineering, all from the William States Lee College of Engineering. He earned his associate’s degree in applied science-civil engineering technology from CPCC.
