A Cameroonian national and current World Bank country director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, she will take up her post on 1 September, according to bangladeshpost.net.
Mercy Miyang Tembon is an experienced international development professional who has worked in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America for over 30 years. She is the World Bank’s Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, effective July 1, 2019, based in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. In this position, she oversaw a large portfolio of projects, technical assistance, and financial resources worth more than $15 billion to promote economic growth and social development in both countries. She led the implementation of the World Bank Group’s Country Partnership Framework to support the development priorities of both countries. She also led the policy dialogue with governments, civil society and other stakeholders to achieve the development goals of both countries.
Over 20 years at the World Bank
Mercy Tembom joined the World Bank in 2000 as an education specialist and has since held senior positions in various countries. Prior to her appointment as the World Bank’s Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan, Mercy Tembom served as Country Director for the South Caucasus (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia) in the Europe and Central Asia region, based in Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia. She was also the World Bank’s Country Director for Burundi and Burkina Faso in the Africa region.
Mercy Tembon holds a PhD in Economics of Education from the University of London, England, an MSc in Educational Policy, Planning and Management from the University of Liverpool and a BSc in Education from the University of Cameroon. Prior to joining the World Bank, she was a Research Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, UK. She has also completed certified courses at Harvard University and the Saïd Business School at Oxford University. She is the author of several publications on education, gender and economic growth.
She is also a life member of the Board of Directors of the Parents’ National Education Union, Bamenda, Cameroon, which she founded in 1989.
Mercy Tembom has received numerous individual and team awards – including the World Bank Group Diversity and Inclusion Leadership Award in 2010, and the World Bank Group Staff Association Excellence in Leadership (ELA) Award in 2014. She speaks English, French and Meta, a language of Cameroon.
