According to Safaricom’s CEO, Peter Ndegwa, Michael Mutiga will lead Safaricom’s business development and transformation agenda.

Michael Mutiga is responsible for Strategic Partnerships, Mergers and Acquisitions, Safaricom’s funding strategy and asset optimization.
With over 20 years’ experience in Banking, Michael Mutiga joined Safaricom from Citibank where he was a Managing Director and Head of Corporate Finance for Sub-Saharan Africa from 2019, covering over 40 countries on the continent. Responsibilities also entail the digital client strategy for SSA. In addition, he was a Senior Credit Officer at Citi.
He was with Citibank for 15 years and has held various senior local and regional management and leadership roles.
Michael Mutiga led the Corporate and Investment bank for Citi in Kenya, where he was responsible for managing a client asset book of over US$800 mn, generating revenues of US$90mn from a client base of over six hundred corporate client relationships.
Over the course of his leading teams in the banking sector, in particular in Kenya, the team as been recognized as the best Corporate bank in Kenya for 5 different years and Michael Mutiga was individually awarded as the ‘best corporate banker’ for a similar number of times.
Banker at Barclays/Absa Capital
Prior to joining Citibank, Michael Mutiga worked in Barclays/Absa Capital, where he grew from a Management Associate to the Regional Coverage Head – East Africa, Investment Banking Division Africa, a role he held until he joined Citibank in 2006.
Previous roles have spanned working as a lawyer in Kenya and a brief stint in the United States. He worked in roles on three different continents, covering roles in risk management, remedial management and debt markets.
Michael Mutiga holds a Bachelor of Law Degree from the University of Nairobi, and Masters in Law degree from Temple University. He is an Advocate and a Certified Public Secretary.
