Ranked in the Forbes 2023 list of America’s richest self-made women, 38-year-old Iman Abuzeid is the CEO and co-founder of Incredible Health, a company she set up in 2017 to help solve the nursing shortage plaguing American hospitals. Her fortune is estimated at 350 million usd.
Incredible Health, explains Forbes, works like an enhanced version of LinkedIn for nurses; their profiles are matched with open positions listed by US hospitals.
Incredible Health describes itself as the fastest growing career marketplace for permanent healthcare workers and “puts nurses in the driver’s seat”. Hospitals go directly to nurses, not the other way around. The first and only platform to focus on permanent employees rather than contract workers, Incredible Health is already used by 700 hospitals in the USA, including Hospital Corporation of America (HCA), the world’s largest private hospital group, and by 1 in 4 American nurses.
According to the company’s founder, recruitment takes less than 20 days, and the platform saves each hospital at least $2 million a year. “Incredible Health’s exclusive algorithm-based technology matches hospital needs with the right nurses,” says Iman Abuzeid on her LinkedIn page.
Incredible Health is headquartered in San Francisco, California, and operates nationwide. The company is backed by leading venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz, Obvious Ventures and Base10, as well as leading health systems Kaiser Permanente and Johns Hopkins.
From doctor to entrepreneur
The daughter of a Sudanese surgeon living in Saudi Arabia, Iman Abuzeid holds a medical degree from the University College London School of Medicine (UK) and an MBA from the Wharton School, one of the world’s most prestigious business schools, located within the University of Pennsylvania (USA). Iman Abuzeid’s nuclear family includes three surgeons.
After a career as a doctor, Iman Abuzeid led product management at healthcare technology start-ups before co-founding Incredible Health with Rome Portlock, an MIT graduate from a nursing family.
Valued at over $1 billion
In August 2022, Forbes reported, Iman Abuzeid announced that Incredible Health had raised $80 million from private investors, valuing the company at $1.65 billion. ires in the world have achieved this, the uOnly three other none women among them being Rihanna, Essence Magazine had reported.
Forbes points out that Iman Abuzeid operates in a very exclusive environment, as she is one of the few black female founders to run a company valued at over a billion dollars.
